Baltic International Summer School 2007 Concludes with Good Results; Minister of Education Hands Out Certificates to Participants

Valmiera, August 20, 2007. – Latvian Minister of Education and Science, Dr. Baiba Rivza attended the closing reception of the Baltic International Summer School 2007 on Friday, August 17 and personally met with the summer school participants and handed out the certificates. The minister was impressed with the quality of the summer school and made positive remarks about the results.

Before the closing ceremony the minister spent 30 minutes talking to the participants about their experiences in Latvia and at the summer school. Some of the participants greeted and introduced themselves to the minister in Latvian, which they had learned during the two weeks of the summer school.

Ministry of Education and Science had awarded scholarships to 9 of this year’s participants, who took the opportunity and thanked the minister personally for the opportunity to study at the summer school.
Baltic International Summer School 2007 featured 16 lecturers from 8 different countries. 28 participants from 10 countries attended two weeks of the school which focused on the future of public communication in the age of new media. Participants had an opportunity to attend lectures in the mornings, workshops in the afternoons and participate in wide variety of social activities in the evenings. The maximum number of credits that could be earned during the summer school was 3 ECTS (for classes) and 1 ECTS for taking Latvian language classes.

Almost all participants have said in a questionnaire that the overall impression of the summer school was either “good” or “excellent” and that they would not mind coming back for a similarly arranged program next year.

Here is what some of our participants said: “What I enjoyed was the possibility to speak with the lecturer afterwards. That they were staying for some time and that we lived in the same dorms”.

“I wanted to make a wish. This wish would be for the students of next BISS... I wish they will have as great weather here as BISS 2007 did, as great organizers as this year, as great people from all over the world and I wish them to finally find out WHAT the absolutely best summer in the Baltics is, because I already know that! :)”

“This was a great experience during the two weeks. We could actually get to know huge amount of information in relatively short time. I loved the positive attitude from lecturers, summer school students and organizers. BISS 2008 definitely should be organized in Valmiera again!”
