Vidzeme University College invites applicants for 10th Baltic International Summer School

Valmiera, Latvia, February 5, 2008. – Vidzeme University College announces that Baltic International Summer School this year will take place on August 1-17 in two Baltic countries – Latvia and Estonia. The focus of the school this year will be “Communication. Technologies. Integration.” and it will gather motivated journalism, public relations, new media and mass communication students as well as other interested individuals from all over the world. More information about the event as well as online application for students can be accessed at http://biss.va.lv.

The summer school will start out in the heart of Latvia – in Valmiera – where students will learn about new communication technologies in theory and practice from recognized international experts, and continue with field trips to Narva (Estonia) and Daugavpils (Latvia) where they will examine the social integration issues and visit local media outlets to gain real-life experience about media’s role in integration of bilingual society. During the summer school students will also have an opportunity to learn or refresh Latvian and Russian language skills.

To mark the 10th anniversary of the summer school, Vidzeme University College decided to expand the official summer school activities beyond the Latvian border and for the first time the participants will have classes in another Baltic country – Estonia. In addition to traditional free time activities intended for understanding the Baltics better, such as Baltic film evening, folk dance evening, sports evening and excursions, several social activities will be organized differently this year. For instance, international students will have a “home stay” evening where they will be invited to stay with local families in Valmiera for one evening to experience the Baltic life in real life setting. We hope that this one evening will make new friends to our participants in the Baltics for life. We invite families from Valmiera and surrounding counties to fill out the application on http://biss.va.lv, if they would like to become a host for one international student for one evening between August 1 and 17 this summer.

The overall coordination of the Baltic International Summer School is provided by Vidzeme University College but this year it is joined by two more co-organizers – Daugavpils University and Narva College. Traditionally the summer school has had many friends and supporters from public and private sector who provide extra scholarships for students to participate in the summer school. Several of them have already agreed to support us this year as well – Latvian Ministry of Education and Science and Valmiera City Council, as well as private companies “Latvian Mobile Telephone” and Hansabank Swedbank. We expect more organizations and companies to join this list soon.
